Javelin™ Software

ZS Associates is a consulting firm that provides Sales and Marketing solutions to pharmaceutical companies worldwide. The products the company offers — Javelin™ software — cover three domains: Sales Planning, Sales Compensation and Business Intelligence & Integration. Three of the major products I'm leading the design on are Javelin Territory Designer, Javelin Quota Refiner, and Javelin Communication Manager.

To gain the knowledge I needed for the incentive compensation practice area. I read two books — The Complete Guide to Sales Force Incentive Compensation and The Future of Sales Compensation. Then to make sure I had completely understood the knowledge, as a practice, I created a payout chart based on a client document on incentive compensation business rules.

The payout chart outlines business rules being involved in the payout process. It offers an easier way to comprehend the complex business flow.

Case Study 1: Javelin Communication Manager (JCM)

Javelin Communication Manager was the very first project I worked on after joining the company. The application is a web portal and email application designed to easily publish, share and archive sales performance reports. Built-in features include allowing individuals access only the information that they have permission to view.

Instead of a patchwork approach that tackles small problems one at a time, I prefer a holistic design process to eventually improve the entire ecosystem of an application. I started the design process by obtaining a copy of the user guide, which outlines all features and includes exemplary use cases. It helped me acquire a high-level understanding of the application. I then created an application map to visualize the main features of the application. Based on the application map, I made suggestions on multiple features across levels and created workflows.

Case Study 2: Javelin Territory Designer (JTD)

Javelin Territory Designer enables sales organizations to establish efficient and effective sales territories using analytics to create optimal territory designs and analyze territory coverage.

 

Being one of the most established Javelin products with a large user base, JTD has been used by top clients for more than two decades. The downside of that  is the dated look & feel—the current framework has not been updated for more than a decade. Originally, stakeholders wanted a repaint of the current UI. However, after carefully evaluate the product, I suggested the application would need more than just cosmetic changes to make a meaningful impact on the usability.

I started the design process by familiarize myself with the workflow by asking for an in-depth walk-through of the current application by the engineering team. Afterwards, I underwent an expert review of the current UI and was able to identify and propose several UI changes. (fig. 3.1)

Case Study 3: Javelin Quota Refiner (JQR)

Setting accurate sales goals for every sales rep in every territory is a difficult task for headquarters. Javelin™ Quota Refiner is Web-based software that allows field sales managers to easily refine sales goals to reflect unique conditions in their territories, while supporting company goals.
